Easter eggs

The Polish Museum in Rapperswil

The Polish Museum in Rapperswil
Rapperswil, Switzerland

Three painted eggs made of wood and colourfully decorated using various techniques.
Decorating eggs is a pre-Christian tradition, and originates from the beliefs associated with the Slavic cosmogony, spring festivals and pagan perception of the world. Over time, pagan rites were overlaid with the Christian tradition, combining the revival of nature in the spring with the resurrection of Christ. The symbolic meaning of Easter eggs is made up of many elements, including the symbolic meaning of the egg itself, and the symbolic meaning of its decoration consisting of both the ornaments and colours.
