Titian’s Ecce Homo in the Brukenthal Art Gallery gives us the representation of Christ still retaining His full imperial dignity, in spite of the humiliations He has been subjected to. In the representation of Christ’s features, the painter insists upon his doleful yet commanding eyes, the long and powerful neck, His manly chest and the elegant hands holding the bamboo spear (an attribute anticipating His death) that serves as a sceptre. ©Dana Roxana Hrib, European Art Gallery Guidebook, Second edition, Sibiu 2011.

  • Artist Biography: Tiziano Vecellio, better known as Titian, was probably the most highly acclaimed and successful of the artists of his time; his patrons included the most select members of Italian aristocracy, of the elites of Venice, as well as a pope, three emperors and the kings of France and Spain. Apart from a few short trips, he spent the best part of his life in Venice, whose praises he never stopped singing all his life. Titian enjoyed an exceptionally long artistic career (he lived to the ripe old age of ninety-one) and his creative powers were intact to the very last days of his life. In his old age, he used his fingers to apply colour, thereby imparting an impression of energy and depth to the pictorial space of his work; three centuries later, this was to be emulated by the Impressionists. In contrast to other major artists of the High Renaissance, Titian worked solely in oils. Some of his most famous paintings treat religious and mythological subjects, but he owes his extraordinary fame, without any doubt, to his work as a portrait painter. ©Dana Roxana Hrib, European Art Gallery Guidebook, Second edition, Sibiu 2011.
