In 2018, ID moved from its Chicago Loop location to the place where you are now viewing this anniversary exhibition: the new Ed Kaplan Family Institute for Innovation and Tech Entrepreneurship on Illinois Tech’s main (“Mies”) campus in Chicago’s South Loop. The Kaplan Building has been designed from the beginning to support ID. The school has more space — a combination of spaces for individuals, teams, and open studios — in a visually compelling environment created with the needs of advanced designers in mind. While ID experienced the same disruptions as other educational institutions during the COVID-19 pandemic, the Kaplan building is emerging as a hub of activity for ID students, faculty, and visitors, a lively intersection of the Bauhaus legacy and ID’s perpetual promise of future invention.
