In 1883, Englishman Joseph Edmondson obtained a patent for a circular calculating machine based on the stepped-drum mechanism. His design was based on Thomas de Colmar’s simple “arithmomètre”.
The advantage of Edmondson’s machine was that it was not limited to a certain number of decimal places if a division produced a remainder. Photo: Jan Braun, HNF
