The eighth president of the Republic of Korea was indirectly elected by the National Council for Unification. Elected as the eighth president, Park Chung-hee's inauguration was held indoors at Jangchung Gymnasium on Dec. 27, 1972. The inaugural ceremony was attended by about 3,300 persons from all walks of life.
