In 1977, portable desktop gaming computers started to become popular. While they might not have been capable of winning competitions, they made great companions for many chess enthusiasts. One notable example is the Electronica IM-01, the first Soviet mass-market chess computer, manufactured in Leningrad, USSR. At the time, it was considered a marvel of modern technology.
