"The Dionaea Muscipula, or Venus's fly-trap, is figured upon this plate. This singular vegetable is a native of the State of North-Carolina, where it grows in boggy ground…. Each leaf is terminated by a very remarkable apparatus, which is endued with such a highly irritable power, that if an insect alight upon it, or if it be touched with a pin, the part immediately closes, and retains the irritating object."
