His son Tirso de Jesus would later move to Puerto Rico and become involved with airplanes and flying. In 1983, he flew his gyrocopter called the Cabra Loco, the Mad Goat, from Puerto Rico to the Dominican Republic giving the D.R. a World Guinness record. Tirso founded the first school of civil aviation in the Dominican Republic.

Drawn from the research of CUNY DSI Research Associate Vivian Guerrero Aquino, this story is part of the Institute’s Ellis Island Project, which chronicles the arrival of Dominican immigrants and preserves their personal histories.
