The painted scheme in the Elysium Closet was commissioned by William Cavendish c.1620. The Elysium Closet was one of Cavendish's private bedchambers the other, the Heaven Closet, is situated across the hall. The ceiling was based on a print by Primaticcio, but certain elements have been altered and in some case new characters have been added.

This painted scheme continues throughout the Little Castle and it was designed to amuse and engage visitors.
