Embroidered Crossbody Bag

Yunnan Provincial Museum

Yunnan Provincial Museum
Kunming, China

The Bai (which means “white” in Chinese) people, both men and women, mainly wear white clothes out of their worship of the white color, which is deemed as a noble hue by branches of this ethnic group living both on the plain and in mountainous regions. The Bai women’s hair is usually adorned with elements symbolizing “wind, flowers, snow and the moon”, scenic highlights of the place where they live; while the Bai men are often seen on distinctive tie-dyed vests featuring a well-trimmed decorous cut as well as strong color contrasts.
