With exquisite detail, this seal stone depicts a grasshopper perched on a leaf. The subject, the distinctive material, and the extremely high quality of workmanship all suggest that the artist was Dexamenos of Chios, a master engraver who signed four other known gems, one depicting a heron accompanied by a grasshopper.
