The first abandoned station on the Underground was the original Farringdon Street station on the Metropolitan Railway. Opened in 1863, it was replaced in 1865 to accommodate the extension of the line in a new direction. This engraving from the Illustrated London News shows the Metropolitan Railway stations on 27 December 1862.
