The legendary Enigma cipher machine was developed in the early 1920s by the German engineer Arthur Scherbius in Berlin and initially marketed for commercial purposes. The machine has three rotors, each of which performs an alphabetic substitution cipher. By combining the rotors in series and using a plugboard with variable wiring, very complex scrambling of the message can be achieved. Photo: Jan Braun, HNF
