Matera European Capital of Culture 2019

Matera European Capital of Culture 2019
Matera, Italy

A direct bridge between Japan and the European capitals of culture is the one created by the EU Japan Fest, a consortium that promotes the land of the Rising Sun through collaborations between Japanese and European artists.
For 2019 the photographic project "European Eyes on Japan" chose the photographic lenses of the Italian Alessia Rollo and the Bulgarian Vladimir Pekov to talk about the contemporary Japanese world with a new perspective.
Mikiko Kikuta and Tommaso Delvecchio curated the relative exhibition that highlights the differences and points of contact between several countries, bringing together the shots of both photographers above mentioned.
Two large-scale installations by the Japanese artist Takashi Kuribayashi complete the photographic exhibition set up with lights and mirrors in the evocative setting of the hypogea of the SoutHeritage Foundation where the works "Cielo Capovolto", specially designed for the city of Matera, and "Entrances" invite us to adopt a new perspective and to reflect on what is invisible and not immediate.
