Entre os olhos e o deserto

Entre os olhos o deserto (1997) is an installation made with three projections of a series of more than 400 images. The variety of timings and the combination of images creates a hypnotic rhythm, accentuated by fusions and overlayings. Realized in 1996 at In-Site, a biennial exhibition held on the border between Mexico and the United States, the work involves the approximation of two classic genres in photography: portrait and landscape. On the one hand, portraits of eyes, on the other, records of the desert and the border, scenes of the city and ruins, all charged with nostalgia. The soundtrack combines popular American songs with the musical work Gymnopédie n.1, by Erik Satie (1866–1925). At Inhotim, the installation also includes a profusion of metal elements, most of them pieces left over from the pavilion’s construction, creating a collage of objects that are overlaid to the collages of sound and images.
