This work bears the signature “Gennai" and is thought to be the only extant oil painting by Hiraga Gennai (1728-1779), the leading theorist of Western-style painting in the late Edo Period. Born in Shido, Sanuki province (now Kagawa Prefecture, Shikoku), he was a well leaned and multi-talented man, also famous for joururi (ballad drama), etc.
