"EVIL GENIUS [The Birth of Highlife in Nigeria]" celebrates Victor Olaiya, the "Evil Genius" who revolutionized highlife music in Nigeria.
The central flgure, masked in green, embodies his self-proclaimed title, “The Evil Genius”. This masked persona, inspired by the classic fllm, “The Mask” reflects his enigmatic and innovative spirit. He holds a trumpet and a white handkerchief, his signature performance look. His suit, inspired by Ghanaian Kente cloth, acknowledges the birthplace of highlife and the influence of E.T. Mensah, who inspired Olaiya to pioneer the genre in Nigeria.
A sunrise backdrop symbolizes the dawn of highlife in Nigeria. Silhouetted palm trees and traditional houses evoke the South-South and South-East regions where the music first took root. The Nigerian flag represents the nation's newfound independence. Olaiya's music,
often laced with social and political commentary, contributed to this transition. He was even invited to perform at the independence celebration, solidifying highlife's place in Nigeria's cultural identity.
A taxi with the plate number "BB" honors Bobby Benson, another highlife pioneer. Dancing figures with Afros capture the generation that embraced this music, their clothing reflecting the style of the 70s and 80s.
Adding to this historical narrative is the subtle depiction of Stadium Hotel, Olaiya's own establishment. This venue served as a hub for highlife music, where his band frequently performed and captivated audiences. Even today, it remains a cherished spot for those seeking to experience the magic of highlife.
This artwork is a personal tribute to the harmonious melodies of highlife, a genre that shaped Nigerian culture and continues to inspire.
