James "Jimmie" Robert McKee founded the Excelsior Club on Beatties Ford Road in 1944. It was the first establishment of its kind for African Americans in Charlotte, who were excluded from visiting white social clubs and venues. Excelsior became a hub for entertainment, as well as a meeting place for organizations and a neutral space for blacks and whites to meet and discuss political issues during the 1960s.
