Congress passed the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882 which halted Chinese laborer immigration for 10 years and denied Chinese from becoming naturalized U.S. citizens. First vetoed, the law was signed by president Chester Arthur. Subsequent laws would extend this Act until 1943. Most policies remained in effect until 1965.
