Following the outbreak of World War II the majority of Berlin's museums closed to the public. As a general site for National Socialist military propaganda. the Zeughaus (armoury) remained open, despite serious damage from 1943, until as late as September 1944. During this time the museum hosted several special exhibitions featuring war booty.
