The juxtaposition of inflated and deflated dolls in one space also seems to allude to social relationships. Some people tend to be ostentatious and vociferous, while others are more restrained and inconspicuous and tend to hide themselves off to the sides. The artist purposefully employs both colored and transparent figures to contrast and form an inexplicable dialogue that touches the inner world of every viewer.
“Plastic mouthpieces in the Expansion and Contraction series symbolize the pores on our skin. Rolls of mouthpieces are my attempt to approach the viewers. The blowing function of the mouthpiece symbolizes a behavioral pattern. Viewers will feel the ambience emanating from the plastic objects and recall a time when they were just babies, suckling at their mothers’ breasts. Such is the “contact aesthetics” approach to interacting with the viewers,” the artist says.
