Extract of historic map overlaid on current Ordnance Survey map of Belper Market Place

This image shows a map from around 1840 of Belper town centre around King Street, Chapel Street and Cheapside, which has been overlaid on a current Ordnance Survey map of the area.

The roads and brook match up beautifully demonstrating the skill of the Victorian surveyor. It is also obvious where new roads have been added and new buildings built but in other ways how little the layout of the town has changed in nearly 200 years.
