Fairy Mask

Sierra Leone National Museum

Sierra Leone National Museum
Freetown, Sierra Leone

This is a Fiere, or Fairy, mask, worn by the Jolly masquerader, as part of the Krio Oje Society. Such masks are worn with a costume made of brightly coloured fabric and shiny material such as tinsel, or galance. The Jolly comes out to make fun, dancing in an overtly feminine way. It often danced by a younger member of the group. This example is painted yellow, with a black moustache.
