The painting represents two sisters who perform and beg on the streets of Rome - a moving contemporary subject, as was fashionable in the mid-nineteenth century. Though the expression of the younger girl is intended to play upon the emotions of the viewer, the classically inspired architectural backdrop and carefully arranged poses tend to idealize and ennoble the subject to avoid offending sensibilities with the direness of actual poverty.
