As soon as Van Gogh arrived in the southern city of Arles from Paris, he was inspired by the vast landscape. He painted this simple farmhouse in a cornfield there and then, partly in thick brushstrokes and partly using little stipples: techniques he had learned in Paris. Van Gogh made a sketch of this landscape in a letter to his brother Theo, dated 12 May 1888.
