Night battle scene showing Union naval ships and various other vessels on the Mississippi River between Forts Jackson and St. Philip in the early morning hours of April 24, 1862. A Confederate ironclad, CSS Manassas, appears to be pushing a fire raft into a Union ship at left, possibly the flagship USS Hartford. The sky is filled with flares and ammunition bursts. Some cannon balls can be seen hitting the water's surface.
