Born under the warm Caribbean sun in Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic, on June 15, 1894, was a young man named Felix Antonio Nolasco. His path would soon lead him far from his homeland.
Just a few months before embarking on a new life in the United States, Felix made a pivotal choice. On May 15, 1916, he exchanged vows with his beloved Cecilia in her native Puerto Rico, where Felix had been living. Together, they planned for a future across the sea. Felix was the first to make the journey, arriving in the United States on August 24, 1916. A few months later, on November 21, 1916, Cecilia followed, leaving Puerto Rico to join her husband in New York and begin their new American life side-by-side.
Drawn from the research of CUNY Dominican Studies Institute Research Associate Vivian Guerrero Aquino, this story is part of the Institute’s Ellis Island Project, which chronicles the arrival of Dominican immigrants and preserves their personal histories.
