Human figures and flowers were often the subjects of Chen Jing-hui's paintings. The artist's use of lines to depict the contours of human figures conveys a sense of three-dimensionality, imbuing the portraits with grace and warmth; moreover, the clothing via figures wear offer a glimpse at the fashions of the time. This painting was shown in the 14th Provincial Fine Arts Exhibition, in which Chen Jing-hui served as juror, a day worth celebrating. The woman in the picture sits on the floor, inclined to one side. She is dressed in a white cheongsam and embroidered shoes and holds a fan, a faint smile on her lips revealing the joy in her heart. The lines are strong and vigorous, yet at the same time soft and yielding, of varying thickness but delicately rendered nonetheless, delineating the body's structure, conveying a feeling of warmth and presence. The shading creates a sense of depth and volume, the empty background heightening the thematic focus. Simple, refreshing, without excessive detail, the painting vividly expresses the artist's aesthetic ideal. The work's delicate grace and beauty can be savored again and again.
