Whereas the majority of the insignia from the Ming dynasty were woven in kesi(silk tapestry) or brocade, this badge provides a rare example of an embroidered Ming rank insignia. The design of this rank badge, with the birds rendered in a large scale and dominating the composition, remained popular throughout the Ming period.
