Petras Kalpokas – is a classic in Lithuanian painting as well as being a pedagogue. His painting "Fisherman’s Cabin in Palanga" is interesting not only because it is one of the few sunny landscapes in Lithuanian painting, but also for its inspirational context. In 1923 Lithuanian regained the Klaipėda District and became a sea-faring state with a port city, and to mark this moment the state initiated ways of recording this new status in culture. The state financed painters, sculptors and photographers to work by the sea. Their creative works were intensively publicized in the press and through exhibitions. Meanwhile the optimistic work by P. Kalpokas, "Fisherman’s Cabin in Palanga" can boldly be classified as a painting in which the tune of the state’s commission can be heard loud and clear.
