This dramatic ornamental is the state tree of Virginia and Missouri and produces the state flower of North Carolina. Varying in size and shape, more than 50 species grow primarily in eastern North America and northern Mexico. The dogwood’s bark has been used to treat fevers, pain, rashes, and inflammation in humans and to treat mange in dogs, which may be how it got its name.
