The flying squirrel is a member of the Sciuridae family and is protected as a natural monument in Korea. It is widely distributed throughout the country, except for Jeju Island, Ulleung Island and island areas. Its eyes are very large and its ears are short and broad. The tail is flat and shorter than the body. The wing membrane extends from the ankle of the front paw to the knee of the rear paw, so when the legs are stretched out, they spread out like a wing and fly from tree to tree. They are very difficult to spot and track, as they typically travel 20-30 meters in a single glide, sometimes over 100 meters. They are nocturnal and live mainly in mature hardwood trees. They feed on tree fruits, insects and seeds.
