Food or Serving Bowl (Presentation Bowl)

1880–90

The three largest baskets on display, all likely made for the commercial market, are modeled on native food service bowls. When used indigenously, the main view would have been of the interiors, which in two cases are patterned with bold, well-executed geometric designs. The two small, pink crosses on this example may be a maker’s mark, a kind of signature; the crosses are made with flicker (woodpecker) quills.
