In 1982 Forfar Athletic came close to writing one of Scottish football’s greatest fairytales. The Loons did well to reach the semi-finals of the Scottish Cup that season, beating Hamilton Academical, Heart of Midlothian and Queen’s Park away from home to set up a date with Rangers at Hampden. Incredibly they held the League Cup winners to a 0-0 draw and might even have won the game, had they been awarded a penalty late on. The teams met again in a replay less than a week later, which Forfar lost 3-1. Rangers went on to the final, where they were beaten 4-1 in extra time by Aberdeen.
