Historical black and white photo of the old railway station in Amer, midway between Olot and Girona.
The Girona-Olot railway was the main communication artery of the regions of La Garrotxa, La Selva and El Gironès until the 1960s. A modest narrow-gauge railway (‘carrilet’ in Catalan) 54 km long, it plied the banks of the rivers Ter, Bruguent and Fluvià under the eerie shadow of the dormant volcanoes of La Garrotxa. Already disappeared, its ancient and endearing furrow has many pleasant surprises in store for the traveller.
The old Amer railway station, located on the route of the Carrilet Olot– Girona Greenway Nature Trail, is a testimony to the county's railway past. Built at the end of the 19th century, it was a key point for the transport of goods and passengers between Olot and Girona.
