Fragment of a Missal for the diocese of Regensburg

After the death of Johann Sensen­schmidt, his brother-in-law Johann Pfeyl took over the printing workshop in Bamberg. For a period of 25 years, he was the only printer in the city.

Like his predecessor, Johann Pfeyl produced numerous liturgical books, but now not only for use in the diocese of Bam­berg, but also for other towns. One of them is a missal for the diocese of Regensburg which was printed in two colours, a time-consuming process.

The painted initial on a gilded ground and the border were supplied in the same town, in the workshop of Berthold Furtmeyr, where numerous printed books received decoration. In order to create a strong resemblance to manuscripts, the printed text was surrounded with a red frame. A total of nine leaves with painted decoration have survived from this copy of the printed missal.
