Franco's Spain has Arrived / Civil War Poster, 58

This poster shows one of the motifs that would become a primary line of propaganda during the Franco era: the charity organisation Auxilio Social. Through this organisation, one of the most vengeful dictatorships ever known reminded its people of the "selfless work" done by the new paternalistic state with all Spaniards, "making no distinction between the victors and the vanquished".

At the same time, this work exemplifies how women were perceived and represented among Franco's followers. The poster shows an idealized image of a woman-nurse, with the attributes typically associated with this profession, and is but one example of a long series of images with the principle theme of helping the injured, refugees or children, to whom women lovingly provide assistance as "angels of salvation".

Again, the poster's words exalt the figure of the Caudillo, ubiquitous in the posters created by the Nationalists during the war. The emphasis placed on the arrival of Franco's Spain contributes, at the same time, to the concept of country being identified with the figure of a univocal leader, while marking a distinction from the other Spain, the one involved in an armed conflict.
