Nairobi, Kenya

Woven beaded apron background with white beads and squared designs in dark blue and red. Woven with sisal fibre and fringed with copper chains, on which they hanged squared cut out of old paraffin tins. In the old days the beads were obtained from the Kamba in return for animals and food. The kamba obtained them by travelling to the coast and obtaining them from coastal people the Arabs. The chain bits of the tin are obtained from Kamba by exchanging with goats. The apron could also be exchanged locally for goats (when no longer needed). This one was made by a young man and worn by both unmarried young men and girls when dancing Mbomboi a dance connected with circumcision.
