Genevieve Gaignard’s work explores the construction and fluidity of femininity, class and cultural identity, as well as the myth of race. In each of her photographs, a mix of street photography and cinematic stills, she performs different characters, shape shifting in ethnicity, culture, and class. The artist’s own mixed race allows for a flexible exploration of race and identity in her self-portraits. Part autobiographical, part allegorical, Gaignard’s work straddles time through semi-fictional imagery that loosely references iconic moments in popular culture and significant historical events.
