In 1912 fashionable millinery and muffs were designed oversize. The ermine muff on the left serves to warm the wearer's hands and provide a container. Some muffs had fitted pockets to secure smaller personal items. In 1909 Messrs Dunhill introduced the 'Amherst muff' which had been patented by Lady Amherst of Hackeny. The novelty was that it was made in leather, rather than fur, so that it did not become sodden when wet. 'It is silk lined, and is fitted with a pocket, which is useful for carrying the purse and other small articles. It is made in various colours to suit the upholstery of the car or the fancy of the users;it is warm and light, and so neatly and tastefully shaped that it is sure to please even the most fastidious.' The Queen, 16 January 1909.14
