In 1965, Braniff Airlines secured Fashion Designer Emilio Pucci to design a flight hostess uniform. With NASA’s Gemini space program in full swing, Pucci designed a unique four-piece futuristic ensemble to be peeled off in sequence. Braniff promoted it as the “air strip.” The uniform began with a reversible lime green coat and “space bubble helmet” for greeting passengers as they boarded. Once the flight began, hostesses would “peel off” the coat to reveal a raspberry suit for beginning and ending the flight. The next layer was the “Puccino” dress for meal service, and lastly a two-piece blouse and culotte for after meal service.
