This view across the ancient city of Granada in Spain is from the hilltop square of Mirador de San Nicolas. The royal citadel of the Alhambra is bathed in early morning light while in the city below drifting mists disperse in the warming air. The snow-covered Sierra Nevada mountain range forms the dramatic backdrop. The artist Henry Stanier was British vice-consul in Granada. Although he occasionally sent his watercolours to London for exhibition, he seems to have found a ready market for his work amongst Granada’s passing foreign tourists.
