Geometric patterns on the Principal Panel

Geometric shapes and patterns play an important role in Amazonian art. An object is not complete for Amazonian Indians unless it has geometric or figurative decoration. Geometric motifs are frequently used to express myths and ideas about the cosmic order and the functions of humans and other animals like the ladder-like parallels lines in the Principal Panel that is a pan-Amazonian symbol for snakes.
