Raised within the context of segregation, Twiggs came of age during the civil rights movement. The first African American to graduate from UGA with a doctorate in art education, he often uses the Confederate battle flag as a subject, appropriating it and using the traditional African process of batik to push aside the stereotypes used to justify racism. Twiggs notes, "Each flag is different. From the outset I found that I could express myself fully with the imagery and I suspect each expresses a unique moment of encounter."
