This miniature from the History of Charles Martel illustrates events in the story of Charles's rivalry with the powerful Burgundian duke, Gerard de Roussillon. As Gerard and his wife Bertha journey to Hungary, bandits steal everything, even their horses, and leave the couple desperate. On the left, a hermit stands before his simple retreat and offers them food and lodging. On the right, the duke and his wife find a spring from which to drink. Loyset Liédet used a palette of bright colors to tell the story in his illustrations, evoking the splendor of contemporary Burgundian court dress.
