German Banner

This banner is part of the Migration Museum's Community Banners project 'Memories and Dreams'. It is symbolic of German immigrants' experiences in South Australia.

The label reads: Scenes of life in northern Germany dominate the lower part of the banner. The rainbow separates the old and the new, while also symbolising the hopes and dreams of migrants. Images of German settlers at work in South Australia stress their dedication to the land and their pioneering role in areas such as the Barossa Valley and the Adelaide Hills. This is further emphasised by the overlapping of German shields and Australian flags. The individual migrant experience is represented by the Kleeman shield. As Martha Kleeman said ‘it is the memories of my homeland’.

Machine applique, cross stitch tapestry work, satin stitch, sequin work. Using printed cloth to make a collage of scenes from northern Germany and South Australia. Six shields are embroidered, one each representing Schleswig Holstein, Kiel, Bremen & Hamburg, Jubilee150 SA, the SA German Association & the family Kleeman shield. A rainbow divides the German scenes from the SA ones. Turquoise gusset at the top & turquoise & white backing.
