Ghidorah (The Loyal Retainers Chapter 7) is a work by the Asian American artist Mu Pan (Taichung City, Taiwan, 1976). In it, Mao Zedong is portrayed as the Great Helmsman, a nod to Chinese communist propaganda, but his ship is flown by a team of crash-test dummies. The sea is a recurring backdrop in Mu Pan’s work, the scene of numerous battles. Mu Pan has made the mixture of cultures his personal brand, presenting in his works multiple narrative layers, personal reflections on human behaviour where humour and violence often come together.
