This print is part of Yoshitoshi's famous series "100 Aspects of the Moon" which depicts scenes from traditional Chinese and Japanese history and lore. The annual meeting of the two constellations Niu Lang and Zhi Nu, who were separated by the Emperor of Heaven and banished to opposite corners of the sky. Only allowed to meet on the 7th day of the 7th month, their annual reunion is celebrated by the lovers' festival Tanabata.
