The painting was not part of Esche's commission to Munch of their family portraits, but after it had been sent to Weimar together with the paintings to be framed, Hanni Escher wrote to the painter that she had an immodest request: whether he would not exchange the smaller portrait of her husband for this one, which they liked so much? Munch immediately agreed.
