The photograph shows pupils in one of the London Foundling Hospital's schoolroom. The Foundling Hospital was originally situated in Bloomsbury, London, opening in 1741 and remaining on that site until 1926. By this time the Hospital was no logner an oasis from the disease and pollution of the city and so the Hospital moved out to the countryside of Berkhamstead.
